The impeachment wake (or maybe tsunami)

It's a new era in Texas politics.

Good morning and happy Saturday. Whew. You’ll have to forgive me for missing last week. It’s been maybe the most consequential two weeks in Texas politics in at least my lifetime. I confess, I couldn’t keep up with all the developments without neglecting other work!

Also, and so that I have it in the record, if you were watching the impeachment trial closely, you may have heard my name called to the witness stand. Different guy.

Quote of the Week

“The fix was in from the start.”

House Speaker Dade Phelan

Theme of the Week: The Impeachment Wake (Tsunami?) + A Profile in Courage

If you’re in the Texas political bubble to any degree, you’ve been living and breathing all things Ken Paxton for the last two weeks. And if you aren’t in that bubble, well, good for you. But you should know that the Texas Senate voted to acquit the state’s Attorney General on 16 counts of impeachment related to official corruption and abuse of office. (The Senate unanimously dismissed four other impeachment articles without any trial.)

A large part of the reason I missed last week was that the narrative lines after Saturday’s acquittal vote were coming so fast, I couldn’t keep up (hey, I’m not a full-time journalist here).

So here is some select reading to catch you up.
